Centuries of History

Monks’ Barn was constructed in the medieval era, most likely in the 13th century. The barn originally belonged to Hurley Priory, the Benedictine monastery that once dominated this part of Hurley.

Constructed from local chalk, flint and stone, its massive eight-bay structure and historic timber roof have survived centuries of change. The monks left Hurley following the Dissolution of the Priory in 1536, but the Barn continued its agricultural life for generations and was still used for potato storage in the early twenty first century.

Sadly a fire took hold of the barn, with the whole barn engulfed in flames. This destroyed the roof and required years of repair work, made more complicated by it’s Grade II* listed status. Due to the number of potatoes stored in the barn, it was remarked by the local villages that at least the smell was lovely.

Today, rather than storing the produce of a medieval monastic estate, the Barn provides an extraordinary setting for weddings and celebrations, allowing another generation to become part of its story. You can find out more about it’s history on our Monks’ Barn History page.
